Cartilage Transplantation

If you suffer from knee pain, there is a new solution available to you in the form of the Carticel procedure. This procedure rebuilds the cartilage in your knee using your own tissue. Two surgeries are involved in the process.

During the first surgery, your doctor will remove some of the cartilage from your knee. The tissue sample is sent to a Genzyme laboratory that cultures the cartilage cells (or chondrocytes) to almost 10 times the original sample size.

The second surgery involves your doctor creating a patch over the damaged cartilage area and inserting the cultured cells into the patch. Over time, the cells will grow to form a replacement cartilage.

Five Advanced Orthopaedic physicians - Drs. Mack, Fogarty, McChesney, Elbaz and - are trained to perform the Carticel procedure. Visit www.carticel.com for more information on the procedure. Call our office to find out if this innovative technique is right for you.
