Steven Viegas, MD.

Dr Viegas graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and received his M.D from the Boston University School of Medicine. He has been at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas from 1983 through 2008, where he was Professor and Chief of the Hand Surgery Division in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Professor of the Department of Anatomy and Neurosciences and Professor of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health.

A leader in the field of hand surgery as a physician, researcher and teacher, Dr Viegas has been the recipient of numerous awards and research grants, including grants from the National Institute of Health and the Orthopaedic Research Foundation. His research has included work in Biomechanics and Anatomy of the hand, wrist and elbow resulting in many awards, including recognition for the ‘Best Scientific Content’ multiple times from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr Viegas has worked with NASA on hand and upper extremity problems experienced by the astronaut crew, long duration space mission planning and design of the space suit. Dr Viegas helped establish an international Telemedicine program for the National Science Foundation which included travel to and establishment of a Telemedicine presence in the Antarctica research stations, including the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

He has been a member of a number of national and international committees and organizations. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Viegas has over 300 publications including two textbooks. He has given over 300 presentations locally, nationally and internationally. He holds a number of medical patents including a patent for a fracture brace which is used all over the world. He has also developed a number of new surgical techniques for the treatment and reconstruction of traumatic injuries and arthritic problems of the hand, wrist and elbow. He has been listed as one of the ‘Best Doctors’ in America multiple times most recently 2011-2012, and in 2009-2010.

Dr Viegas specializes in surgery of the Hand, Wrist and Elbow. He performs endoscopic carpal tunnel releases and wrist arthroscopy and continues to instruct surgeons in these and other new and proven techniques in Hand and Wrist surgery. He is now also offering endoscopic ulnar nerve release at the elbow.
