Dislocated Shoulder Treatment Provided by Advanced Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine of Houston, TX

A dislocated shoulder is a serious issue that requires prompt treatment. When the shoulder is dislocated, the top section of the arm bone (the ball) has come entirely out of the opening in the shoulder blade (the socket). This can be very painful and can severely restrict the affected arm’s range of motion. At Advanced Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine of Houston, Texas, we welcome adults and children who believe they may have dislocated their shoulder and need prompt diagnosis and treatment.

In many cases, our experienced specialists can manually move a dislocated shoulder back in place. This is done in-office and requires only a few simple maneuvers. From there, we may recommend:

  • Medications to alleviate pain and swelling
  • The short-term use of a splint and/or brace to prevent the joint from moving
  • Physical therapy exercises to strengthen and stabilize the shoulder

Dislocated shoulder treatment seldom requires surgery, although there some instances in which a shoulder procedure may be recommended. For instance, we may recommend an operation if the shoulder’s joints or ligaments were severely damaged by the dislocation, or if repeated dislocations occur over a short period of time. If surgery is recommended, our board-certified and double-board-certified shoulder surgeons in Houston can select the most appropriate procedure (we specialize in both traditional and arthroscopic shoulder surgery) and make tailored recommendations for postoperative rehabilitation and recovery.
