Hyaluronan Injections Can Relieve Knee Pain Caused by Osteoarthritis
A healthy knee joint is lined with protective cartilage and lubricated by a thick liquid called synovial fluid, which absorbs shock and allows the bones to glide smoothly against each another. Osteoarthritis can cause both the cartilage and the synovial fluid (specifically, the hyaluronic acid within it) to break down. As a result, the bones may begin to grind painfully together, leading to reduced mobility.
How can hyaluronan injections help relieve knee osteoarthritis symptoms?
A loss of hyaluronic acid can cause the synovial fluid to become thin and watery, rendering it less effective as a joint lubricant. Therefore, replacing lost hyaluronic acid may thicken the synovial fluid, which in turn can potentially improve knee pain and other osteoarthritis symptoms. Hyaluronan injections, or viscosupplements, are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this purpose, specifically for treating knee osteoarthritis.
An alternative to medication
In particular, hyaluronan injections may be considered for patients who cannot tolerate nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as well as for those who are unable to manage their symptoms with NSAIDs.
While the results of hyaluronan injections can vary among individuals, some patients find effective symptom relief. The full benefits may not become apparent for several weeks, but after that, the pain-relieving effects can potentially last for several months. In contrast, the effects of corticosteroid injections – another common knee osteoarthritis treatment – are usually felt within a few days and then last for approximately one month. For these reasons, a patient’s knee pain treatment plan may include both corticosteroid injections and hyaluronan injections.
In addition to helping the synovial fluid serve its function as a joint lubricant and shock absorber, hyaluronic acid may interfere with prostaglandins and cytokines, two naturally occurring compounds that promote joint inflammation and can contribute to knee pain.

Dr Tanous and Chris are the best! Thank you for always taking such good care of me!
I highly recommend Advanced Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine to anyone who needs anything dealing with bone replacement.
Dr. Patel has been great at my pain relief. She doesn’t force me to take any meds I don’t want, or injections. She will give me the injection I want when I need it. Great friendly Doctor.
Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has, at 76, virtually given me a new lease on being mobile and active. I have seen Dr’s Tanous, Patel, and Cubbage for an assortment of neck, spine and hip problems.
AOSM is a very high quality medical facility. They handled my hip replacement both pre and post op with the utmost professionalism.
For the first time in many years and many knee operations on one leg I am without any knee pain. This is a result of a procedure performed by Dr. Patel.
Dr. Cubbage & Staff replaced a disc that had been destroyed between my 4th and 5th vertebra. This is my 4th month since the surgery in January of 2018. I was very impressed with their dedication
Dr. David R. Mack replaced my right hip in June 2009, and my left in October 2010. I am already able to go places and do things on my own again.
Very Knowledgeable and helpful. Went in for an appt. with Dr. Elbaz for tennis elbow. Needed prp injections and they didn’t have an opening til the following week, but since I traveled 2 hrs to their office
So I was going to get on here and brag about what a great surgeon Dr. Cubbage is. But Cubbage is only 3/4 of the picture. He’ll fix you, but Karen is the one that will care for you and heal you!
