What Is a Labral Tear in the Hip?
A hip labral tear is an injury that affects the labrum, a ring of cartilage that surrounds the hip joint socket. The labrum serves as a cushioning seal that holds the top of the thigh bone (femur) securely in place.
A labral tear can result from trauma to the hip joint. Individuals who participate in contact sports such as football, soccer and hockey are particularly susceptible to this type of injury. Additionally, repetitive motions that involve twisting or pivoting the hip, such as those common in golf and softball, can create wear and tear on the joint and eventually lead to a torn labrum.
What does a hip labral tear feel like?
While a torn labrum may not produce any symptoms, it can potentially cause:
- Pain in the hip, groin or buttocks
- A locking, clicking or catching sensation in the hip joint
- Stiffness or limited range of motion in the hip
How is a hip labral tear treated?
A torn labrum will not heal on its own, but mild symptoms can often be managed with rest and other nonsurgical remedies, such as:
- Medications – Over-the-counter pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen can reduce painful inflammation.
- Physical therapy – A physician or physical therapist can recommend specific exercises to stretch and strengthen the hip muscles.
- Injections – A powerful anti-inflammatory medication can be injected directly into the painful area of the hip.
To address severe or persistent symptoms, surgery may be considered to repair or reconstruct damaged labral tissue or remove (debride) a small piece of the labrum.

What Our Patients Are Saying
I just recovered from my 2nd back surgery by Dr. Mohr. I love the people there so much I just went back and saw a shoulder surgeon Dr. Fehsenfeld for cortisone shots.
I was at your office yesterday saw Dr Mack & Dr Brooks I had a great visit with them. My right knee feels GREAT! today.
I was treated by Dr. Brooks, about a month ago, for a terrible pain on my right knee. He treated me and within 2 days I was like new. Now the pain started on my left knee. This time I went immediately to Dr. Brooks.
I never review places or services on Facebook, but I could not let others know how blessed I was to have Dr. Cubbage as my surgeon. He and his lovely staff, including awesome Karen,
Dr. Mohr and his staff are very friendly people. They treated my father very well and made him feel comfortable in his uncomfortable situation.
I have been fighting chronic knee pain for ten years following a knee replacement, a bone infection, and subsequent knee revision surgery. After a number of failed solutions to pain relief, Dr. Patel introduced me to RF
Dr. Mihu is the most intelligent and polite Dr I have ever visited. Her and her nurse Nicole made me feel so welcomed. I have never encountered a doctor who knew so much and asked so many important questions
I had been in so much pain with my back for years. It got so bad that I knew I had to do something. I went to Dr Mohr for help. I was so afraid to have spine surgery as I had heard so many horror stories.
Dr. Blalock did surgery on my broken wrist on Tuesday. I liked him a lot as did my husband. Took time to explain everything in detail even though his phone was ringing non-stop.
I highly recommend Advanced Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine to anyone who needs anything dealing with bone replacement.
