Post-Operative Rehabilitation

After orthopedic surgery, physical therapy is often essential for helping a patient resume daily function as quickly and safely as possible. Usually, post-operative rehabilitation begins immediately after surgery to help restore flexibility, strength, endurance, range of motion, energy and sleep. Of course, each individual has unique needs and goals. Taking this into account, the physical therapists at Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine of Houston design fully customized post-surgical physical therapy programs for our patients.

A hallmark of our practice is a close collaboration among a patient’s surgeons, physicians and physical therapists, which is maintained throughout the healing process. The goal is to help the patient achieve maximum post-surgical potential.

Here are some common types of surgery for which we design post-operative rehabilitation programs:

  • Spine – Discectomy, disc replacement, laminectomy, spinal fusion, nerve stimulator implantation and scoliosis correction
  • Shoulder – Rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder arthroscopy, subacromial decompression, total shoulder replacement and shoulder manipulation
  • Elbow, wrist and hand – Carpal tunnel release, cubital tunnel release and fracture surgery
  • Hip and knee – ACL and other ligament reconstruction, hip labral repair, knee meniscus repair, Baker’s cyst removal, total hip replacement, total knee replacement, joint manipulation and fracture surgery
  • Foot and ankle – Plantar fascia release, bone spur excision, bunionectomy, ligament repair or reconstruction, neuroma excision, ankle replacement and ankle fusion

Studies consistently show that patients who participate in post-operative rehabilitation programs that incorporate physical therapy recover faster, experience less pain and have better functional outcomes and quality of life over the long run.

If you have questions about the recovery process that will follow your surgery, contact Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine of Houston. One of our experienced physical therapists will be pleased to discuss your condition in detail and recommend an appropriate post-operative rehabilitation program to help you recover. Even if your physician did not prescribe physical therapy, you may still benefit, and no referrals are required for an initial consultation with a physical therapist in the state of Texas.
