What Is an Orthosis?

At Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine of Houston, Texas, an orthosis is often an essential component of effective hand therapy. These medical devices, which are also known as custom splints, can be worn to protect, support and immobilize an injured arm, wrist, hand or finger as it heals, or to correct an orthopedic maladjustment. Some common injuries and conditions that can be treated with an orthosis include fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis and burns. A splint may also be worn after surgery to position a joint or tendon for optimal healing.

Splint fabrication is often a complex endeavor that is best left to an experienced hand therapist. To create an effective orthosis, a hand therapist must apply scientific anatomical, mechanical and psychological principles. Using a special thermoplastic material, which can be heated in warm water to make it pliable, the therapist can precisely mold a splint to a patient’s anatomy.

What are the benefits of a custom splint fabrication?

While prefabricated splints are widely available, a customized orthosis is generally a better option, mainly because it can be specifically designed to meet the unique needs of an individual patient. For instance, custom orthotics are often adjustable, which means that they can:

  • Accommodate swelling
  • Allow access to wounds for cleaning and care
  • Allow for gradual increases in range of motion
  • Meet differing requirements at various stages of rehabilitation

As compared to a mass-produced splint, a custom orthosis can provide a number of benefits, including a superior fit, greater comfort, better compliance with splint-wear instructions and the best possible functional outcome.

If you’d like to learn more about custom splint fabrication, contact us. During a personal consultation at Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine of Houston, TX, a hand therapist can review your medical history, evaluate your diagnosis and fabricate your custom orthosis.
