Dr. Daniel O’Brien is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee musculoskeletal care, including primary and revision hip and knee replacement. His clinical expertise is in adult lower extremity reconstructive surgery and orthopedic trauma. He performs both minimally invasive anterior and posterior approaches to the hip and can offer computer-navigated and robotic-assisted surgery as well. He uses multimodal pain control and enhanced recovery protocols to help patients get back on their feet faster.

A native of the Philadelphia area, Dr. O’Brien completed his undergraduate studies in the Ivy League at the University of Pennsylvania, where he successfully defended his honors thesis on the cognitive effects of deep brain stimulators and subsequently graduated with distinction, all while playing defense for the men’s ice hockey team. In addition to his science coursework, he completed a minor in Health Systems Management through the Wharton School of Business.

He then attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and served as the Sports Medicine Research Fellow at the prestigious Rothman Institute, the healthcare providers for the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and 76ers. Between his first and second year of medical school, he completed a research fellowship in the Biomechanics laboratory at the Hospital for Special Surgery, the #1 hospital for orthopedics in the country. He then attended orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Connecticut, and after his chief resident year, completed his fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at Houston Methodist, the #1 hospital in Texas.

Dr. O’Brien is the author of over 50 research publications, abstracts, and book chapters. He has been awarded grants for his research and his work has been presented at national and international meetings. In addition to presenting his own research, he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. His greatest passion however, is patient care. He believes that comprehensive care involves a strong patient-doctor relationship. He strives to truly get to know his patients and provide all the information that they need to make well informed decisions.

An Eagle Scout and marathon runner, Dr. O’Brien enjoys being outdoors and exercising. He spends his free time with his wife, who is also a physician, and their two children. Dr. O’Brien is grateful be settled in Houston, close to his in-laws and just down the street from where his wife grew up. He believes there is no better place to live and raise their family.
